Vintage vs. Antique: What’s the Difference?

If you love hunting for old, interesting, one-of-a-kind things, you’ve probably heard the words vintage, antique, retro and thrifted used almost interchangeably. But they don’t actually mean the same thing.

And with vintage becoming more popular than ever, we thought it was time to clear things up.

So, What Exactly Is Vintage?

Generally, something is considered vintage when it’s at least 20 years old, but not yet old enough to be considered an antique.

That means vintage isn’t just mid-century furniture and 1970s kitchenware anymore. The 1980s, 1990s and even the early 2000s have officially entered vintage territory.

Yes, we’re at the point where things some of us remember buying new can now be called vintage.

Vintage can include just about anything—clothing, furniture, records, home décor, kitchenware, toys, collectibles, electronics and more.

What Makes Something an Antique?

The generally accepted definition of an antique is an item that is at least 100 years old.

In 2026, that means items made in 1926 or earlier are now crossing into antique territory.

Antiques can range from furniture and artwork to jewelry, glassware, books and everyday household objects. And while age is part of the definition, age alone doesn’t necessarily make something valuable.

Condition, rarity, maker, history and demand can all play a role.

What About Retro?

Here’s where things get interesting.

Something doesn’t necessarily have to be old to be retro.

Retro usually describes an item that was made to look or feel like something from an earlier era. A brand-new lamp inspired by the 1960s, for example, could be considered retro—but it wouldn’t be vintage.

Think of retro as a style and vintage as an age.

And Then There’s Thrifted or Secondhand

These terms simply mean an item has been previously owned.

A two-year-old sweater from a thrift store is secondhand, but it isn’t vintage. A sweater from 1965 is both secondhand and vintage.

And that’s exactly what makes the hunt interesting.
